Quality Assurances for EHR Implementation
The EHR is comprised of many system functions and applications (building blocks) that are needed to provide integrated information to support the clinical workflow of the care provider. The chart depicts some of those applications. Implementation of these clinical applications is not in itself sufficient to ensure that an organization will realize the benefits from the automation of these functions. It is more important to address the organizational and operational process changes needed to reach the enterprise’s business and clinical goals.
The most successful organizations learn from others. HCIC has been observing, supporting and cataloging characteristics of successful organizations and their “best practices” to successfully implement and realize clinical and financial benefits from EHR systems. Our recommendations of “best practices” come from our involvement in managing system implementations and process improvements at inpatient and ambulatory sites. We have also surveyed many EHR sites, reviewed Davies EHR award winning sites and compiled the literature from various organizations and journals including Health Affairs and JAMIA.
