Dr. Crawford has over 30 years of experience as a healthcare IT professional including a wide variety of consulting engagements for both providers and healthcare software vendors, 10 years of working R&D for a healthcare application provider, and 7 years experience managing IT in healthcare organizations.
Dr. Crawford’s experience and background includes both healthcare application knowledge and its underlying technology. This includes current experience in building applications with new software development tools, technologies, and techniques.
Representative Client Experience
Dr. Crawford has served as a consultant specializing in software development and technical support in the healthcare industry. Areas of experience include the Electronic Health Records, enterprise systems, patient management, imaging, client/server technology, interfaces/integration, web applications and web services.
- Consultant to major healthcare systems vendor on clinical imaging product. Project involved review of existing strategy, formulation of overall clinical and document imaging strategy, and integration with existing HIS systems and future CPR systems.
- Technical consultant to National Institute of Health in their effort to acquire a new clinical information system. Lead team that developed technical requirements in the following areas: Clinical Data Repository, interfaces, conversion of data, development/customization tools, clinical terminology support, design and ease of use, management and operations, performance, and documentation/support. Also built live test demonstration (LTD) scripts to test and demonstrate vendor capabilities. .
- Consultant to healthcare companies and investors interested in acquiring and/or merging with software companies. Areas of support include market demand, product definition, technical architecture, development tools, software development process, and software design.
- Technical Consultant on project to deploy an Enterprise Master Member Index that will maintain demographic and patient identifying data across an enterprise. It involved both foreground (screen scraping) and background HL7 interfaces with disparate information systems. Prepared the technical requirements document and evaluated potential vendors.
- Developed a client/server system to support a patient care and research for Cardiology and Heart Transplant patients for a major University. System includes patient data, problems, medications, lab data, clinical events, results, admissions and visits, and specialized clinical data related to Cardiology. System generates clinical notes that are used in the patient’s medical record.
- Developed Extract-Transform-Load application for a healthcare software vendor to support business intelligence application. System allows importing of data in virtually any format, generates relational tables, provides job processing and scheduling functions, and provides change control functions so that customers can automatically receive updates to system tables and retain existing customer data.
- Project Manager in effort to deploy an Intranet application to make clinical documents accessible by providers throughout a major healthcare organization. Project involved several HL7 interfaces and use of browser technology.
- Designed and programmed an application to interface a scanning/handwriting recognition technology to an Anesthesiology system. This project was demonstrated at the recent national Anesthesiology conference.
- Designed, developed and implemented a touch screen, Windows-based system for measuring patient satisfaction at a major medical facility. The system uses a distributed architecture to collect, aggregate, and report results.
- Developed web applications and windows-based applications using a variety of relational database management systems and development technologies including object-oriented tools, test driven development, and Web 2.0 technologies. Subject Matter Expertise.

Prior Experience
For a major healthcare application vendor, Dr. Crawford served in a variety of roles including directing the investigation of new technologies, performing technical reviews of potential acquisition candidates, directing interface development, serving as company spokesman in HL7 organization, directing a major clinical application development, and serving as company technical spokesman before clients and user groups. Prior to working in R&D, Dr. Crawford directed IT in a large hospital directing the deployment a number of healthcare applications and technology deployments. Dr. Crawford also served as an analyst evaluating the effectiveness of healthcare applications including food service, pharmacy, order entry, results reporting, and nursing.
Education/Affiliations
Dr. Crawford’s education includes a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science, a M.S. in Computer Science, and B.A and M.A. in Mathematics. Dr. Crawford is a member of HIMSS and has spoken at national meetings and local HIMSS chapters.
